I was a fan of Jo Packham when I first started quilting. I loved all of her Vanessa Ann designs that she created with Terrece Beesley. I thought they were incredibly clever And talented women and couldn’t wait until the next book came out. My sister and I would call each other and run to the book store to get the newest edition.

Enter “Where Women Create”, the book:

Here was Jo again, bringing us now a peek into our favorite artists studios to give us great ideas on how to design our own lookalike workspaces.

How excited I was to see the magazine “Where Women Create”

at my retreat in Clear Lake last year! (Ok, so I was a several issues behind the eight-ball then, but I caught up quick.) So quick, that I used the inspiration from those magazines to create my own beautiful, functional workspace.

I’m honored to bring you a very special interview with Jo when I met her at Quilt Market! What an amazing lady!

After the first year of the magazine, Jo and Jenny Doh co-authored a newer edition of “Where Women Create: Book of Inspiration”

And, Jo has also released the book below:

All together, they are a wonderful inspirational trip of books that will help you create your vision of the perfect studio creative-play place.

So remember in the podcast where I said to make sure to look at the blog to see what the giveaway will be?

ok, How about the current copy of Where Women Create and Where Women Cook, a gift from me for listening to the blog?

So… leave a comment here and tell me what you found interesting from the interview with Jo.
Since I was detained in Utah due to the stomach flu/food poisoning (don’t know which), I will extend the drawing for this giveaway until Friday, May 20.

I can’t wait to see how you were inspired by Jo!

oh to have a room just to create in … when my DD moved back home with grandson in tow my craft/ quilting studio evaporated into the atmosphere….. but I would not have it any other way.

But a Nonnie can dream can t she?

Let me with the lottery then I can have it alllllllll

  2. I like the fact that she doesn’t change the way her interviews write and I like her honesty about how she does things. My hats off to jo

  3. Hi Annie,

I am inspired to take over the pool room! OK, let me explain….when my son started working in Boston over the summers when he attended college there, I realized he was not coming back home. So….I took over his bedroom. I converted his loft bed into a cutting table & utilized all his furniture. I sent you pictures of that room & you featured them in a blog post. Well, that room is getting small. When the kids were younger we purchased a full size pool table that takes up all of our old family room. All the kids are grown now & no one uses the pool table & the room is rarely even entered. So….this podcast convinced me it’s time to sell the pool table & move into that room! Good idea, don’t ya think?!

I loved hearing Jo’s attitude about the cycles of life, taking time off to be with families, and hoping to finish on an up cycle. I wish I lived near enough to her Creative Connection event to attend! I have not read her books or magazines, but I will now be on the lookout for them. Thank you!

  5. GmaTerri says:

I too was a fan of Vanessa Ann! Right now I’m not in a “season” to have a craft space to myself, but I saw Jo’s magazine at the retreat last year and thought it was beautiful. I also appreciate that she lets her authors keep their voices so you get an idea of what they’re really like. It’s amazing that she’s been able to stay in publishing for so many years!

  6. Emily hinkel says:

Loved the news that there is a magazine. Must find it!

  7. Linda says:

I didn’t know there was a magazine about where women create. What a fabulous idea. Now to find out where to get a copy if I don’t win the drawing. I love to see what clever and creative inspiration others have in their studios/craft areas. Right now mine shares with my office and it is long and narrow and I am not allowed to put up anything on the walls, which I find very frustrating. A resource like Jo’s would be invaluable.
Thanks once again for the great podcasts you create.

  8. mommaontherun says:

I need this magazine to help me with my crafting area. Can’t believe that Jo had the inspiration to create a magazine that was perfect for the creative, but inspiration challenged woman. Way to go!

  9. Hi Annie
I Enjoyed your interview very much. Such inspiration makes me feel it’s never to late to turn your creativity into some type of business. I must admit I’ve never heard of these magazines. Something new to look out for.

  10. Deloris Burckhard says:

I have not purchased this magazine but after listening to her I will be stopping in B&N tonight-she had such a wonderful story of how she got to where she is today and where she would like to go from here.

  11. Pat Leask says:

Lovely interview. I am very lucky to have a wonderful “creative” space but one can always use some additional ideas for it – will have to see if I can find her magazine here.

  12. Cathy Richardson says:

I was so impressed with your interview Jo Packham. I have seen this magazine in the stores and heard people talk about it, but not in the depth you have in this podcast. I can’t wait to go get a copy of this magazine. I didn’t realize the articles are in the designer’s voices. I also want to find a copy of Where Women Cook – thank you for informing me!!!

  13. Gail Summers says:

    Anne,
Jo’s interview was not only a life story but a life lesson to use the talents given to each one of us deep inside, don’t be stopped by a few rocks in the road ( or boulders!), be flexible, and appreciate your gifts. Where have I been not noticing her magazines! Oh yes, NO Barnes and Noble up here in the high Sierra Nevada Mountains. I WILL seek them out!!

  14. Bev Monson says:

Hi Annie! As I am writing this I realize that I should realiy email you, I have lots to write! But while I am here I want to say that I LOVED your conversation with Jo Packham. I have listened to it twice already! I really liked Jo’s can-do, just-do-it attitude. And I too looked with longing at the info for the first Creative Connection! What a good idea that is, as well as the magazine. It was interesting to hear about the background and philosophy of the magazine and its design. I haven’t purchased a copy yet, but I think I am going to need to now!

  15. Lori H says:

I really enjoyed this interview. I had never thought about all of the different ways women create & cook. I like thinking about an artist kitchens vs. a white kitchen…I’m sure the food all tastes wonderful! Thank you for showing the world of real women.

  16. Gay Wehrman says:

I love your blog and podcasts, Annie. They enrich my life. Jo’s books and magazines look great. I had not heard of them before and appreciate you mentioning them. I’m redoing my townhouse and would no doubt be inspired by them.
    Thanks.
    Gay

  17. Shelley Mills says:

Jo’s timely advice to find out “Why” when someone says “No,” to a book, pattern, or some other creative idea was helpful to me. Your interview with Jo opened up a new direction I can take in my creative world and share with others. Thank you, Annie, for what you do and say!

  18. Jeanie says:

    Annie,
Are you OK? I know it is too late for the give-away, but since you said you were sick, I was worried, hope you’re better!!!

  19. Anne Jacobson says:

I absolutely loved this podcast. I, too, am so inspired by Mary Engelbreit and all things cheerful and colorful. I am a brand new listener but have been “catching up” on itune podcasts. Now I am up to date and will keep up.

Jo’s way of featuring the women in her magazine and letting them write and be themselves…so fun. I will be picking up that mag soon. Also, I have been really scared to take the next step with my talents ( sell? teach?) and both of you have given me such a dose of courage. Just take one step at a time… love ya

  20. Phaye Geiger says:

I love the “Where Women Create” magazines.
Thanks for the opprotunity to win some inspiration…..

  21. Cindy says:

Well, I can definitely say that it’s nice to know that there are people out there looking for people trying to get started and wanting to help them out. I am definitely going to be picking up that magazine!!! Unless I win, of course :)

  22. Cherry says:

Loved this interview and when she said she let’s them write the articles and only checks the spelling, allowing the article to really tell who they are! Just amazing! Can’t wait to get my hands on this magazine!

  23. Callie says:

I really enjoyed this podcast! I’ve never really looked at the magazine (the price tag scared me off!), but now I’m eager to check it out. I plan on buying at copy the next time I’m at Costco. :)

  24. Jaye says:

I loved this interview. I wanted to sit down, write Jo a letter (a real one that you have to put in an envelope with a stamp) and beg her to hire me. I would even be her slave girl. Her enthusiasm was wonderful.

  25. Melissa says:

Just heard this episode today and LOVED it. I would say it’s among my favorites. I loved Jo’s matter of fact way of talking – as though we’re sitting down have a chat. I love the Create magazne and buy it on occasion and asked my husband to buy the Cook issue that has Ree on the cover (just discovered her recently – yes, I’ve been under a rock!).
